VPC is a registered charity that began in 1959, dedicated to everyone who supports parents in educating their children. We know that it takes a village to raise a child, so we serve all parents and the wider community including non-government school parents, in Victoria and beyond.

VPC provides parents with updated knowledge and resources We aim to provide the confidence for parents to take an active role in their children's schooling. We also provide the vital link between parent groups, government, education authorities and the media.

We welcome parents, educators and aligned businesses to become members of our vibrant online community. VPC strive to be a diverse, inclusive and independent organisation on and offline. Everyone is welcome. Why not Join Us

VPC MISSION

The Victorian Parents Council provides a voice for parents in the decisions that affect our children's education, from the time they are born and into adulthood.

We inform, encourage, support and respond to the needs of parents of all ages. While we are located in Victoria, through the online world we support parents locally, nationally and globally. We are an inclusive organisation for all.

We strive to give parents the knowledge, resources and confidence to take an active role in their children's life long learning and provide a vital link between parents, government, education authorities and the media in Victoria.

VPC VISION

PROVIDING YOU WITH A VOICE TO STATE AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

The VPC meets with the State and Federal education ministers, politicians and education authorities. Through our meetings and submissions, we raise awareness for your needs, and gain support for activities that ensure the policies and practices of governments are inclusive of parents’ views.

VPC is a founding member of the Australian Parents Council (APC).  Through the APC our views as a state affiliate are represented at the national level.

PROMOTING POSITIVE FAMILY-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS

Successful schools bring school leadership, teachers and parents together to work towards shared goals. The VPC strengthens this relationship by promoting positive parent engagement in learning.  With the support of schools, we hold educational events and seminars and share information and resources that support parents, educators and the school community.

SUPPORTING YOU WITH INFORMATION TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES AND ADVOCACY

We support parents through the provision of information and resources shared through a range of physical and digital mediums.  Topics include but are not limited to internet safety, bullying, mental health, career choice and general parenting. The VPC continually strives to remain relevant to your needs by liaising with aligned organisations to provide regular additional information, resources, events, seminars and training opportunities.

VPC HISTORY

The VPC was originally known as the Parents and Friends Federation of Victoria and was established in 1959 by a group of Catholic school parents concerned with the lack of government support for Catholic schools.

Within a short time, a groundswell of support from parents led to the VPC extending its interests to all independent schools.

The objectives of the VPC were to safeguard the rights of parents and children and to improve the standard of education in Australia, and to foster and promote the following principles:

  • That as stated in the UN Declaration of Human Rights parents have the prior right to choose the most appropriate form of education for their children

  • That all parents are entitled to exercise that right without financial disability being imposed on them by the State

  • That the primary purpose of education is the physical, mental, spiritual and moral development of children

  • To achieve for all parents and children equity in the distribution of public funding for education

Through the 1960s and 70s the VPC held a number of public meetings in Melbourne which attracted thousands of concerned parents council. Opposition came from various state school organisations and the Council for the Defence of Government Schools (DOGS) which attempted to challenge, unsuccessfully, state aid as unconstitutional.

Gradually governments of both persuasions accepted the argument that all children deserve a level of support from the government regardless of where they attend school.

Now 60 years on, VPC has become one of the fastest growing online communities. Because there are no borders online, VPC now inform and engage all parents interested in supporting the education of their children.
